Children & Adolescents

A team of Family Institute psychotherapists specialize in working with children and adolescents.  These professionals work with families with children from birth through adolescence to help navigate and reduce the challenges that may interfere with a child's and family's development.  We help families with concerns related to their children's well-being, such as:

  • Adoption
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Attachment
  • Behavior problems
  • Body image issues
  • Depression
  • Developmental transitions
  • Eating disorders
  • Emotional regulation
  • Grief and loss
  • Learning disabilities and differences
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual & transgender (LGBT) issues
  • Neurobehavioral difficulties
  • Parent-child communication and relationship difficulties
  • School-based problems
  • Sibling issues
  • Substance abuse
The Family Institute Child & Adolescent Program offers the following services:
  • Counseling & Psychotherapy for children & families
  • Focused Support Groups for children, parents & families
  • Testing

Sometimes the exact nature of a psychological, emotional or cognitive problem is difficult to assess through diagnostic interviews alone. The Family Institute at Northwestern University performs Psychological and Neuropsychological Assessments for both children and adults. These tests provide valuable information that can help the therapist, parent, physician or school address problems more effectively. We discuss all test results with the family and provide a complete written evaluation.
