Standard Curriculum

The Two-Year Standard Curriculum requires 24 courses/units for the degree (every course is the equivalent of one unit). Please note that 18 of these are tuition units and 6 units cost no tuition.  Student s are required to attend the program on a full-time basis taking at least 3 courses each quarter. In addition, students are required to complete two field placements. A nine-twelve month field placement or a “practicum” is required in the first year involving 16-20 hours per week in the field along with coursework. A nine-twelve month field placement or “Externship” is required in the second year involving 20-24 hours per week in the field along with coursework.

Two-Plus Curriculum

The Three-Year Two-Plus Curriculum requires 27 courses/units for the degree (every course is the equivalent of one unit). It consists of the same 24 units as in the Standard Curriculum plus three additional units for a total of 27 required units. Please note that 24 of these are tuition units and 3 units cost no tuition.  The Two-Plus Curriculum offers a second tuition option for students not requiring loan assistance or not needing to defer loans in the third year of the program. This option requires 24 courses/units for the degree with 21 of these units carrying tuition and 3 carrying no tuition. Students are required to register for the program on a full-time basis for the first two years taking at least 3 courses each quarter. In year three, students must register part-time and take either one or two courses each quarter. Since the Two-Plus Curriculum is designed for qualified students entering the Counseling Psychology field for the first time following a career in another discipline and/or with minimal academic and experiential background in psychology an additional field placement, a “Pre-Practicum” is required involving 12-16 hours per week in the field along with coursework. Then in the second year, a nine-twelve month field placement or a “practicum” is required in the first year involving 16-20 hours per week in the field along with coursework. In the third year, a nine-twelve month field placement or “Externship” is required in the second year involving 20-24 hours per week in the field along with coursework.  Applicants may ask to be reviewed for the Two-Plus Curriculum; however, final decisions about eligibility for Two-Plus are made by the Admissions Committee.

Specialization Courses
A specialization or track is a cluster of courses along with an Externship field training experience in a particular area of interest. This area of interest is determined by the academic needs, career goals, and licensure requirements of each respective student and is chosen by the student in collaboration with the academic advisor. While developing specializations and areas of professional interest, students are encouraged to: a) take as many elective courses as possible in the area of specialization; b) assist faculty or doctoral students as a research or teaching assistant; and c) work in a counseling-related job under supervision.
