Welcome to The Family Institute at Northwestern University

Founded in 1968, The Family Institute at Northwestern University is the Midwest’s largest organization devoted to family and couples therapy, community outreach, research and the education of family therapists.

Clinical Service

The Family Institute provides counseling and psychotherapy throughout the Chicagoland area to for families, couples and individuals.

Community Outreach

The Family Institute’s philanthropically-supported Community Outreach Program brings counseling and psychotherapy directly to at-risk, low-income populations through partnerships with neighborhood schools and nonprofit groups.

Education

The Family Institute is an independent affiliate of Northwestern University and offers two Northwestern graduate degree programs: Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy, in addition to conducting postgraduate training through clinical and research fellowships.

Research
Through its affiliation with Northwestern University, The Family Institute conducts important research that leads to better understanding of mental health issues and improved treatments.
