Kenichi (Ken) Shimokawa, PhD

Dr. Kenichi (Ken) Shimokawa is the Madigan Postdoctoral Fellow at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, completing an advanced research and clinical training in individual, couples, and family therapy. Dr. Shimokawa received his PhD in clinical psychology from Brigham Young University. Prior to joining The Family Institute, he completed his pre-doctoral internship at University Counseling Center at University of Rochester, emphasizing in working with couples and individuals with international background. His previous training included provision of individual, couple, family, group, and multiple-family group therapy with diverse clientele in various clinical settings, including an outpatient clinic, youth substance abuse/dependence treatment center, youth residential treatment center, university counseling centers in Utah, Hawaii, and New York, forensic assessment, and psychiatric emergency department.

 

Dr. Shimokawa treats adolescent and adult individuals, couples, and families. He has special interests in working with individuals, couples, and families with ethnic, racial, and cultural minority backgrounds. He works with couples struggling with communication, intimacy, and conflict issues. He treats individuals and couples with depression, anxiety, stress-related issues, interpersonal relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, and grief and loss. Based on holistic and relational perspectives, Dr. Shimokawa integrates various psychotherapeutic approaches to help clients achieve desired therapeutic outcome and growth.

 

Dr. Shimokawa's research focuses on development and evaluation of psychotherapy quality assurance systems to better understand how people change through the course of therapy and to identify, and enhance the outcome of, those who are not experiencing desired progress in therapy. Dr. Shimokawa has published and presented at regional, national, and international research conferences in this area of research.

 

Clinical interests: Couples with communication, intimacy, and conflict issues; cross-cultural adjustment and acculturation issues; interpersonal relationship concerns; depression and anxiety; stress management; men's issues; family of origin concerns; grief and loss; spirituality/religion; and bilingual therapy (Japanese/English).
