
Betty MacKune-Karrer, MA, LMFT
Betty MacKune-Karrer is a licensed marriage and family therapist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. She is also a clinical lecturer in Northwestern University's Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy Program.
Ms. MacKune-Karrer was previously the director of postgraduate education at The Family Institute. Before joining The Institute, she was director of the Family Systems Program of the Institute for Juvenile Research, and clinical associate in psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has served as the Chair of the Committee on Cultural and Economic Diversity, of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA) and was the director for region III of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

Ms. Mac Kune-Karrer was a past editor of the Journal of Feminist Family Therapy, an International Forum (1994-1998), a member of the of the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Marriage and Family Therapy (1996-2000) and the editor of the AFTA Newsletter (2002-2005). She co-edited Minorities and Family Therapy (with George Saba, and Kenneth Hardy, 1990) and co-authored Metaframeworks: Transcending the Models of Family Therapy (with Douglas Breunlin, and Richard Schwartz, 1992). She co-authored “Metaframeworks” (with Breunlin) a chapter in Comprehensive Handbook of Psychotherapy, edited by Jay Lebow, 2002, and co-authored the “Gender Metaframework” (with Cathy Weigel-Foy) a chapter in Silverstein, L.B., and Goodrich, T.J., Feminist Family Therapy: Empowerment in Social Context, 2003.
Ms. Mac Kune-Karrer is an approved supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and teaches national and international courses on supervision.
