Staff Practice Psychotherapists of The Family Institute

William P. Russell, MSW, LCSW, LMFT

William Russell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist.  He is a senior Staff Therapist at The Family Institute and a Core Faculty Member in the Master of Science in Marital and Family Therapy (MSMFT) Program at Northwestern University. His current activities at The Family Institute include clinical practice, teaching, clinical supervision, supervision mentoring, academic administration, and agency consultation.  He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychology at Northwestern University and a former Director of the MSMFT Program. 

Mr. Russell received a master's degree in social work from the University of Illinois in 1976, and completed three years of postgraduate training in marital and family therapy at the Family Systems Program of the Institute for Juvenile Research.  He is a Clinical Member and an Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, a Member of the American Family Therapy Academy, and a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work. 

For over thirty years, Mr. Russell has provided clinical services, trained therapists and developed programs.  He has worked in academic institutions, community agencies, public schools, private practice, and the Veterans Administration.  For eleven years he was the Director of Community Programs at The Family Institute. In this role he developed, supervised and administered a network of twelve community-based mental health programs for economically disadvantaged families. Over the years he has taught and supervised systemic, integrative psychotherapy in several contexts, with past faculty appointments at The School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, the Family Systems Program of the Institute for Juvenile Research and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In his clinical practice Mr. Russell treats families, couples and individuals.
