Richard E. Zinbarg, PhD

Dr. Zinbarg is a licensed clinical psychologist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, specializing in cognitive-behavioral therapy to treat adult and adolescent anxiety, panic and depression.

He is an associate professor in psychology at Northwestern University, and is the Patricia M. Nielsen Research Chair and co-director of the Anxiety and Panic Treatment Program at The Family Institute.

Dr. Zinbarg received his PhD from Northwestern University in 1989. He also directed the Oregon Program for Anxiety Study and Treatment at the University of Oregon.

For the past 16 years he has published and presented extensively on anxiety disorders. He recently received a five-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health through Northwestern University's Psychology Department to study predictors of risk for anxiety disorders and major depression starting at high school age. He plans to use this research to design a program to prevent the development of these problems among those identified as being at high risk. Dr. Zinbarg is also currently doing research designed to improve the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.
