The Role

Core faculty members are employees of The Family Institute at Northwestern University with significant teaching, supervising and governing responsibilities in the COAMFTE-accredited Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy Program (MSMFT Program), housed within the Center of Applied Psychological and Family Studies (CAPFS) at Northwestern University. They hold clinical faculty appointments in the Department of Psychology at Northwestern.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Design and delivery of an outcome-based education framework that exists in the context of program and institutional missions 
  2. Delivery of measurable student learning outcomes consistent with the development of systemic, culturally competent, empirically informed, and ethical Marriage and Family Therapists 
  3. Assessing the academic and professional competencies of students and all aspects of the program’s operation, such that program improvements can be made based on data and feedback collected 
  4. Core faculty operate within the guidelines and requirements of the MSMFT program, the policies of Northwestern University, and the AAMFT Code of Ethics 
  5. As part of the core faculty governing body, support the program’s mission, goals and student learning outcomes, including the acquisition of knowledge and skills within the practice of systemic frameworks 
  6. Attend and contribute to core faculty meetings and quarterly cohort program meetings 
  7. Take an active role on the program admissions committee from recruitment to open house support, and review of applications and applicant interviews 
  8. Participate and provide leadership in program sub-committees 
  9. Serve as part of a collaborative team of faculty governance and demonstrate flexibility in role and responsibilities within a changing structure 
  10. Serve as the academic advisor to MSMFT online graduate students through their course of training from student orientation to graduation 
  11. Serve as an instructor for the program and be willing to participate as a guest lecturer for various courses as needed 
  12. Serve as a clinical supervisor 
  13. Work with and support a variety of student issues including academic and professional development and remediation 
  14. Engage in scholarly activities including but not limited to having a research lab and mentoring students in their scholarly pursuits 
  15. Exhibit ongoing efforts to advance and receive academic promotional ranking within the department of Psychology at Northwestern University 
  16. Participate in activities that support the profession of marriage and family therapy that go beyond the program tasks 
  17. Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to support, teach and contribute toward the online branch of the MSMFT program as needed 
  18. Writes program communication, marketing material, and blogs as requested 
  19. Holds strong MFT identity  
  20. Committed to the program’s integrative, systemic approach  
  21. Has the capacity to engage with numerous stakeholders using strong interpersonal skills  
  22. Supports students in career development 
  23. Perform other duties as assigned by manager 

Summary of Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills 

  1. Strong MFT identity as evidenced by LMFT licensure, professional affiliations including AAMFT, graduate degrees, scholarship, and AAMFT Approved Supervisor status or eligibility. *Hold a current license or be license eligible as a Marriage and Family Therapist (or its equivalent) in the State of Illinois 
  2. Commitment to the AAMFT Code of Ethics. 
  3. Demonstrated commitment to an integrative, systemic and empirically-informed approach to clinical practice and the training of therapists 
  4. Evidence of ability to teach a broad range of MFT courses in an online setting 
  5. Experience in supervising graduate students in clinical settings 
  6. Demonstrated leadership and maturity in addressing complex educational and training issues 
  7. Demonstrate flexibility in teaching both on ground and online as needed 
  8. Present collegiality, willingness and an initiative to work collaboratively with the other members of the core faculty team as well as teaching and supervising faculty as required. 
  9. Skilled at connecting and building rapport with a diverse range of students, staff, and faculty  
  10. Creativity, innovation, and ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team  
  11. Ability to adapt to new and rapidly changing situations  
  12. Strong time management, organization, and problem-solving skills  
  13. Ability to successfully resolve issues from identification through resolution  
  14. Effectively work with teaching and learning technology, multiple databases and student platforms  
  15. Excellent active listening and interpersonal skills  
  16. Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  17. Knowledgeable of (or willingness to learn) the integrative systemic therapy (IST) perspective 

Minimum Hiring Specifications

  1. Earned doctorate in MFT/CFT from a COAMFTE-accredited program (or related field will be considered; ABD will be considered with a demonstrated plan for completion) 
  2. AAMFT Approved Supervisor (or Supervisor Candidate) 
  3. Experience teaching in an online environment 
  4. Licensed as an LMFT (or be license eligible) in home state 
  5. Experience teaching graduate-level courses in the areas of family therapy or other systemically oriented courses  
  6. Experience supervising graduate students in clinical settings, who may work with diverse clients  
  7. This position is open to individuals who qualify at the rank of a Clinical Assistant Professor 
  8. Eligibility to hold rank of Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern University

  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations

  • Must be able to apply established protocols in a timely manner  
  • Must be able to determine solutions to problems  
  • Must be able to operate successfully while handling multiple projects

Compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: scope and responsibilities of the position; a candidate’s applicable work experience, key skills and qualifications, as well as internal and external market considerations.  The pay range for this full-time, exempt / non-exempt position is $90,666.00 - $130,333.00/year. The Family Institute provides competitive benefits, including health, a 403(b) retirement savings plan, generous time off, and professional development.
