Jay Lebow, PhD, LMFT, ABPP
Jay Lebow is a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed marital and family therapist at The Family Institute at Northwestern University. He is also a clinical professor at Northwestern University. Dr. Lebow received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Northwestern University and is also a graduate of The Family Institute's training program.
Dr. Lebow has maintained a large clinical practice in individual, couple and family therapy for more than 30 years. He sees a wide range of cases, following an integrative method of practice he has written about in several books and articles and presented about at national and international conferences. He also has a specialization in working with individuals, couples, and families going through or with other issues about divorce, having also written and presented extensively about this treatment.
Dr. Lebow is board certified in Family Psychology; a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and its Divisions of Clinical Psychology, Family Psychology and Psychotherapy; a clinical member and an approved supervisor of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy; past president of The American Psychological Association's Division of Family Psychology; a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Psychology and American Family Therapy Academy; a fellow of the Academy of Family Psychology; and a former member of the Board of the Illinois Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He has received the award as family psychologist of the year from the Society for Family Psychology and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Family Therapy Academy.
Dr. Lebow is present editor in chief of the journal, Family Process. His publications include four authored books: the recent Couple and Family Therapy: An integrative map of the territory, Research for the Psychotherapist, Common factors in couple and family therapy (with Doug Sprenkle and Sean Davis), and Integrative Systems Therapy (with Pinsof, Breunlin, Chambers and Rampage). He also has edited six volumes: The Clinical Handbook of Couple Therapy (with Gurman and Snyder), the Encyclopedia of Couple and Family Therapy (with Chambers and Breunlin), Family Psychology: The Art of the Science (with William Pinsof), The Clinical Handbook of Family Therapy, the Integrative/Eclectic volume of the Comprehensive Handbook of Psychotherapy and Handbook of Family Therapy (with Tom Sexton). He is also the author of 100 book chapters and articles including an end-of-decade reviews of couple therapy and couple therapy research; the practice update concerned with couple therapy for the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy; a chapter reviewing the research literature in family therapy for the Annual Review of Psychology; chapters overviewing couple and family therapy in Comprehensive Clinical Psychology, the Psychologist's Desk Reference, and the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry; as well as numerous articles and chapters dealing with integrative therapy, research in couple and family therapy, and assessment and treatment in divorce when there is conflict over child custody and visitation. He is a contributing editor for the Psychotherapy Networker and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.
Dr. Lebow is also involved in ongoing development of the Family Institute’s Integrative Systemic Therapy treatment model and in the psychotherapy change research at The Family Institute concerned with assessing progress in psychotherapy and the development of the Systemic Therapy Inventory of Change. He also supervises a group of clinical psychology students.
